Well done!

You have solved the first clue. That tells me you are able to follow the path of the signs.

Now you may begin your journey through Volterra!

Where your City Quest begins

Your quest begins just outside the city walls of Volterra, near the place where I am held. The starting point is located directly outside the city gate Porta a Selci. From here, beside the Fortezza Medicea, the city’s signs begin to speak.

The starting location is at:
43°24'00.5"N, 10°51'59.6"E

Parking instructions

If you arrive by car, I advise you to park outside the city walls, on the same side of Volterra where your City Quest begins.

There are several options, two are:

→ Option 1: Free parking
This parking area "Parcheggio Ospedale" is free of charge and located a little farther away. From here, you will walk towards the city walls and up to the starting point.

👉 Click here to see this parking option on Google Maps.

→ Option 2: Paid parking
This parking area "Parcheggio La Fortezza" is paid, but closer to where your quest begins. It reduces the walking distance, though some uphill paths remain.

👉 Click here to see this parking option on Google Maps.

Whichever option you choose, be prepared for a walk uphill and a few steps. Volterra was built high for a reason.

Take your time. Once you reach the city walls, you are in the right place!

Optional historical background

The Fortezza Medicea dominates Volterra from its high position above the city.

The fortress was built in the 15th century by the powerful Medici family, after Volterra came under Florentine control. Its thick walls and massive towers were designed to control the city, not to protect it.

For centuries, the fortress has served as a prison. Even today, it remains an active detention facility and is not open to the public.

Standing here, you are looking at a place that represents authority, power and judgment, a strong contrast to the freedom of the city just beyond its walls.

Optional challenge

City Quest is a relaxed, story-driven city experience focused on exploration, not on winning. But would you like to turn the City Quest into a friendly competition? You can!

Divide your group into teams. Each team can play on its own phone, using the same start link. The start link can be found in your order confirmation email, or you can copy the URL of this page.

Each team notes its own start time when beginning the first quest. The clock stops when the team arrives at the final location.

Along the way, keep track of how many nudges (hints) your team uses. Each nudge you use adds a 2-minute penalty to your final time. Nudges can be revealed beneath each task if needed.

When all teams have finished, compare your total times, start time to finish time, plus any penalty minutes. The team with the lowest total time wins.

Be honest, the city is watching.

What lies ahead

You are now at the place where my path began. From here, you will walk through Volterra and follow the signs the city left behind.

Along the way, you will be asked to observe, to connect what you see, and to think together.

Some discoveries will give you numbers to remember. Keep them safe in the order you found them, you will need them later. Other discoveries will reveal words. Words and numbers, taken together, will lead you to something the city left to be found.

Listen carefully. They explain why I stand here behind these walls. If you ever feel stuck, help is nearby, but use it only when you truly need it. Nudges (hints) can be revealed beneath each task if needed.

Do not rush. There is no time limit.

The city will guide you, if you are willing to look. When you are ready, let's begin!

Note: To ensure correct puzzle outcomes, we recommend not using automatic phone translations. City Quest Volterra is available in English, Italian, German, and Dutch.

Note: Mobile internet coverage in Volterra can vary. If your connection drops at any point, simply step into a nearby café or restaurant and use their Wi-Fi to continue.

Quest 1 – The wall of memory

Larth speaks

You are standing at a place where Volterra remembers.

Before you enter the city, names are carved into stone. Moments that were not meant to be forgotten. People who acted when it mattered.

These walls do not celebrate glory. They remember courage.

Do not walk away yet. Stay close to the plaques on the city wall and look carefully.

Your task

Several years are carved into the plaques on the outside of the city wall, just to the right of Porta a Selci.

Find the oldest year and the most recent year you can see.

Add these two years together. That is your answer.

Only open a hint if you really need it

A gentle nudge

The most recent year is: 1984

A clearer nudge

The oldest year is: 1887
