The Etruscan Museum of Volterra is one of the oldest Etruscan museums in Italy.

 

It was founded in 1761 and houses a remarkable collection of objects from the ancient Etruscan city of Velathri. Among them are hundreds of funerary urns, inscriptions, everyday tools, and artworks carved from local stone: alabaster.

 

Many of the objects on display are more than 2000 years old.

 

The museum is housed in the historic Palazzo Desideri Tangassi, close to the city walls, and has played a key role in preserving Volterra’s Etruscan heritage.

 

Volterra is especially known for its Etruscan funerary urns, many of which were carved from alabaster and depict scenes from mythology and daily life.
