Piazza Vittorio Veneto has been the heart of Lajatico for centuries. As the village gradually expanded beyond its medieval castle, this square became the centre of daily life, where people gathered to trade, celebrate and meet one another.
Dominating the square is the Castello con Torre dell'Orologio (Castle with Clock Tower). The castle dates back to the 12th century, when Lajatico was established as a fortified settlement overlooking the surrounding valleys. Over the centuries, the defensive fortress was gradually transformed into the building you see today, while the clock tower remained an important landmark for the village.
Unlike larger Tuscan towns, Lajatico has always remained a small rural community. Agriculture shaped everyday life for generations, and many of the surrounding farmhouses and olive groves still reflect that heritage.
Today, the square continues to fulfil the same role it has for centuries. Locals meet here for a coffee, visitors pause to enjoy the atmosphere, and village life still revolves around this welcoming centre.
Each summer, the square also offers a small preview of the Teatro del Silenzio. Sculptures or artworks created for that year's performance are often displayed here before becoming part of the spectacular open-air stage.
